The ball Reds center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. hit for a double in the first inning of Monday's opener against Pittsburgh at Great American Ball Park and the game's official lineup cards are on their way to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y.
Griffey's was the first hit in the new ballpark.
The items will go on display in the "Baseball Today" exhibit within the next week, Hall spokesman Brad Horn said.
RIEDLING'S DAY: Monday was John Riedling's first Opening Day as a Red.
It didn't go the way he would have liked it to. Riedling pitched the seventh inning and allowed two runs on three hits.
Riedling, a 27-year-old right-hander, did not have a good spring. He went 1-1 with a 6.10 ERA in 10 appearances, allowing eight hits and walking nine in 101/3 innings.
That's very unlike Riedling. He has a 2.54 ERA in 75 games with the Reds over the last two seasons.
"I don't know what it is," Reds manager Bob Boone said. "He's out of synch. At this level, you've got to be able to hit a pizza pan with all your pitches. When he can't do that, he goes harder and harder."
Riedling wasn't too concerned about Monday's performance.
"Only one of the balls was hit hard," he said. "I wasn't walking people. I wasn't getting behind."
HELPING HIS CAUSE: A career .140 hitter entering Monday's opener, Reds starting pitcher Jimmy Haynes hit a double in the third inning and later scored Cincinnati's only run.
Haynes had two doubles total in each of the past two seasons.
ODDS AND ENDS: The Reds have a 1-4-1 record in their past six Opening Day games. ... The three second-inning homers by the Pirates on Monday marked the first time Pittsburgh had gone deep three times in an inning since July 4, 2000 against the Cubs. ... All four umpires were born in the region - Randy Marsh (Covington), Larry Vanover (Owensboro, Ky.), Greg Gibson (Ironton, Ohio) and Sam Holbrook (Morehead, Ky.).
