Opening Day in review



The first Opening Day in the Reds' new home offered a dash of nostalgia and patriotism mixed with heavy doses of baseball and excitement:

1:30 p.m.: First fans go into Great American Ball Park for Opening Day.

2 p.m.: Reds unveil statue of Ted Kluszewski at Crosley Terrace, which serves as the ballpark's front door.

2:59 p.m.: Former President George Herbert Walker Bush arrives at the ballpark.

3:19 p.m.: First T-shirt shot into the stands.

3:28 p.m.: Introduction of "special guests," including past and present Hamilton County commissioners.

3:30 p.m.: Majority owner Carl Lindner is introduced. He welcomes fans and thanks taxpayers and people in his front office for the support that made the ballpark possible.

3:33 p.m.: Chief operating officer John Allen is introduced. "If not for you - voters of Hamilton County - this project would have never got off the ground ... This ballpark is built for all of you, the greatest baseball fans on Earth."

3:38 p.m.: Rosie Reds president Sandy Wilcox presents plaques to managers.

3:41 p.m.: Pittsburgh's starting lineup is introduced.

3:42 p.m.: Former Red Pokey Reese is introduced and is roundly booed.

3:43 p.m.: Reds bench players are introduced.

3:47 p.m.: 1869 throwback Reds team emerges from an outfield tunnel through a cloud of smoke as the starting lineup is introduced.

3:49 p.m.: American flag presented by members of the construction team that built the ballpark.

3:50 p.m.: Lee Greenwood sings two patriotic songs, including his hit, "God Bless the USA."

3:57 p.m.: New York City's "singing policeman," Daniel Rodriguez, sings the national anthem.

3:58 p.m.: Red sparks and fireworks fly from the home run celebration smokestack in center field.

3:59 p.m.: Red, white and blue streamers are released from the top deck.

4:01 p.m.: Two large transport planes from the Ohio Air National Guard 179th Airlift Wing fly over the ballpark.

4:02 p.m.: Former President Bush is introduced and throws out the first pitch, a high-arching delivery. He embraces Reds shortstop Barry Larkin.

4:04 p.m.: Former President Bush says: "It's an honor to be here today, off the bench, substituting for another guy you know, President George W. Bush." It draws a huge ovation.

4:08 p.m.: Reds take the field.

4:11 p.m.: Jimmy Haynes fires the game's first pitch to Kenny Lofton for a strike.

4:12 p.m.: First out at the ballpark: Lofton grounds out to first base.

4:16 p.m.: First pitch to a Red: Larkin takes a strike.

4:19 p.m.: First Reds hit: Ken Griffey Jr. doubles down the right-field line.

4:21 p.m.: Austin Kearns becomes the first Red to strike out in the ballpark.

4:29 p.m.: First home run: Former Red Reggie Sanders hits one over the left-center field fence.

4:35 p.m.: Fans boo Haynes when he gives up a second home run in the inning, a three-run shot to Jason Kendall.

4:38 p.m.: First baseball thrown from the stands onto the field as a fan rejects Kendall's home-run ball. Seconds later, Sanders' home-run ball is thrown onto the field.

5:08 p.m.: Reds score their first run when Kearns draws a walk with the bases loaded.

6:21 p.m.: First seventh-inning stretch: Rodriguez sings "God Bless America" before fans sing "Take Me Out To The Ballgame."

7:11 p.m.: Jason LaRue grounds into a fielder's choice for the last out.
