The Reds snapped a five-game losing streak by beating Boston ace Pedro Martinez.
The arms: Opening Day starter Jimmy Haynes pitched five shutout innings. Felix Heredia gave up the Red Sox run. It was the second run the bullpen has allowed in the past 181/3 innings.
The bats: Martinez made the Reds look bad for the most part, striking out nine. But they rallied against him in the fifth. Brandon Larson doubled and Sean Casey singled. After Austin Kearns struck out, Jason LaRue hit his fourth home run of the spring to make it 3-0.
The rest: Ryan Freel came in as a pinch-runner in the ninth. He stole second and third and scored on a groundball.
Up next: The Reds play Pittsburgh at 1:05 p.m. today. Recently demoted Chris Reitsma will start against left-hander Sean Burnett.
