Hamilton's Cook impressing Rockies

Rookie pitcher unscored upon in 14 innings

The Associated Press

TUCSON, Ariz. - Rookie right-hander Aaron Cook pitched five scoreless innings in the Colorado Rockies' 5-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks Monday.

Cook, a Hamilton High product, has not given up an earned run in 14 innings this spring. Opponents are batting .200 against him.

"He has pretty good command of his pitches," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "With that power sinker he always has in his back pocket, he knows he's one pitch away from getting out of an inning."

"This is probably one of my better outings with pitch command and pitch location," said Cook, who was 2-1 with a 4.54 ERA in nine games with the Rockies last season.

MARLINS: Pitcher A.J. Burnett will be examined by Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday after leaving his last spring start with tightness in his forearm.

Burnett, the Marlins' scheduled opening day starter, is 2-1 with a 3.09 ERA in four starts.

INDIANS: Outfielder Alex Escobar, attempting a comeback from reconstructive knee injury, was one of five players sent to Triple-A.

Escobar, 24, tore knee ligaments during spring training last year.

DODGERS: Closer Eric Gagne, pitching in a game for the first time in two weeks, had his third injury of the spring when he was struck in the right calf with a line drive during a 4-1 loss to Montreal.

Gagne, who had an MRI for a sore groin muscle last month and another for a stiff lower back earlier this month, was diagnosed with a bruised calf.

CARDINALS: After another successful batting practice session, closer Jason Isringhausen could make his spring training debut this week, putting him on track to be ready by opening day.

"I would say I'm optimistic about that," pitching coach Dave Duncan said.

BLUE JAYS: Toronto agreed to five-year, $14.7 million contracts with center fielder Vernon Wells and third baseman Eric Hinske.

"It was a two-month process for us," general manager J.P. Riccardi said.

Wells, Toronto's first-round draft pick in 1997, hit .275 last year with 23 homers and 100 RBI.

Hinske, the AL Rookie of the Year, hit .279 with 24 homers and 84 RBI last year.

• Former NBA player Mark Hendrickson, trying to win a job in Toronto's rotation, allowed six hits in four shutout innings with two strikeouts and two walks in a 4-4 tie with the Tigers. Hendrickson and four relievers combined to extend Toronto's shutout streak to 231/3 innings before the Tigers rallied in the ninth.

DEVIL RAYS: The team agreed to a minor league contract with right-hander Rob Bell.

Bell, 26, was released by the Rangers last week. He has appeared in 70 games with the Rangers and Reds and has a 16-21 career record with a 5.95 ERA.

CANSECO SENTENCED: Jose Canseco was released from jail and sentenced to two years' house arrest for his part in a nightclub brawl.

Canseco also received three years' probation. He had spent the last 30 days in jail for violating his probation when he pleaded guilty to battery charges stemming from the Oct. 31, 2001 fight.
