Roster shaping up

The Reds trimmed their roster to 35 players Monday, not including Russell Branyan, Jose Rijo and Luke Prokopec, who are injured. That's 10 above the Opening Day limit.

Here's how it shapes up:

Pitchers (17, will carry 11 or 12)

In the rotation: Ryan Dempster, Jimmy Haynes, Danny Graves, Paul Wilson.

In the bullpen: Scott Williamson, Scott Sullivan, Gabe White, John Riedling.

Battling for fifth spot: Jimmy Anderson, Seth Etherton, Chris Reitsma, Pete Harnisch.

Battling for spots in the bullpen: Jeff Austin, Felix Heredia, Josias Manzanillo, Kent Mercker, Blake Williams.

The skinny: The fifth spot is too close to call. Reitsma could end up in the bullpen if he doesn't win the job. Manzanillo, Mercker and Heredia all have made strong cases to make the club. If the Reds go with 11 pitchers, there will be some very tough calls.

Infield (8, will carry 6 or 7)

Starting five: Sean Casey, Aaron Boone, Barry Larkin, Felipe Lopez, and Brandon Larson. (Reds manager Bob Boone counts Lopez among the starters because he'll get so much playing time).

Lock: WiIly Mo Pena. The Reds would risk losing him if they tried to send him to the minors.

Battling for bench spots: Wilton Guerrero and Juan Castro.

The skinny: Castro will probably make it with a guaranteed contract, barring some kind of trade.

Catcher (3, will carry 2)

Starter: Jason LaRue.

Backup: Kelly Stinnett.

The skinny: It's not fair, but Corky Miller has no chance because he has options.

Outfield (7, will carry 5 or 6)

Starting three: Austin Kearns, Ken Griffey Jr., Adam Dunn.

Backups: Reggie Taylor, Ruben Mateo.

The skinny: Mateo, like Gookie Dawkins, is out of options and the Reds don't appear ready to give up on him. Benny Agbayani and Jose Guillen will start in Triple-A barring a roster move.
