A-Rod expected back at Rangers camp

Baseball notebook

The Associated Press

SURPRISE, Ariz. - Alex Rodriguez was expected back in the Texas Rangers' spring training camp late Sunday after being sidelined with a small herniated disc in his neck.

The star shortstop was to resume modified workouts today. He was examined by Dr. Drew Dossett in Dallas on Sunday morning and cleared to return to Arizona.

Rodriguez began to feel weak after Tuesday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He still felt pain Wednesday, then went home Thursday to Dallas, where a CT scan revealed the inflammation.

Rodriguez told club officials Saturday that he was feeling much better and is looking forward to getting back to the team.

INDIANS: Rookie Jason Davis, 22, was selected as the fifth starter in Cleveland's rotation. The right-hander had a 1.93 ERA in 14 innings this spring. He beat out left-hander Billy Traber, a rookie with a 2.25 ERA in 12 innings.

• The Indians acquired left-hander Derrick Van Dusen from the Texas Rangers for infielder Marshall McDougall.

DEVIL RAYS: Tampa Bay reassigned third baseman Chris Truby and four other players to minor-league camp as manager Lou Piniella trimmed his roster to 40 players. Truby batted .215 with four homers and 22 RBI last season for Montreal and Detroit.

BLUE JAYS: Toronto released pitching prospect Pasqual Coco after he stole money from teammate Diegomar Markwell's locker, the Toronto Star and Toronto Sun reported Sunday. Coco was cut Friday.
