PHOENIX - Elmer Dessens pitched five shutout innings to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 6-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers Sunday.

Dessens, acquired from the Reds in a four-team trade that netted Cincinnati shortstop Felipe Lopez, is slated to be the Diamondbacks' No. 3 starter behind Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling.

In his third start, Dessens (3-0) gave up two hits, walked one batter and struck out one. In 10 spring training innings, the right-hander has allowed one run and three hits.

"I like what I've seen so far," Diamondbacks manager Bob Brenly said. "He moves the ball around. He changes speeds. He's looked really good."

INDIANS: Reliever Mark Wohlers will leave camp to have his sore right elbow examined.

"There's something going on in there that doesn't feel quite right," Wohlers said Sunday.

He has missed much of spring training.

YANKEES: Right-hander Ramon Ramirez of the Hiroshima Carp agreed to terms Sunday.

The Yankees won the right to negotiate with the pitcher after a bid of $350,000 was accepted by the Japanese Central League team.

The 21-year-old native of the Dominican Republic joined Hiroshima last year. He finished the season 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA in two games.

•Reliever Steve Karsay, slowed by right shoulder soreness, reported no problems after throwing for 10 minutes off flat ground Sunday.

PADRES: Left fielder Phil Nevin will have surgery Tuesday on his injured left shoulder and could miss the entire season.

Nevin dislocated the shoulder making a diving catch in an exhibition game Thursday against Colorado.
