Reds 8, Red Sox 8

A matchup between the Cincinnati Reds and Boston Red Sox ended with an 8-8 tie after 11 innings Saturday night.

Jason Varitek, Nomar Garciaparra and Kevin Millar hit home runs for the Red Sox, with the first two coming off Cincinnati starter Danny Graves.

Graves, the Reds' closer for the past four years, has been moved to the rotation and struggled through four innings, giving up four runs and six hits.

Ruben Mateo hit the Reds' only homer. He is hoping to become Cincinnati's fifth outfielder.

A sellout crowd of 7,312 showed up for Saturday's game at Ed Smith Stadium.

The arms: Danny Graves made his third start of the spring and did not pitch well. He worked four innings, allowing four runs on six hits.

The newest Red, Jeff Austin, pitched one inning, allowing three runs - two earned.

The bats: Felipe Lopez, who started at third base, went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Ruben Mateo hit his first home run of the spring.

The rest: The game was the Reds' first sellout of the spring. It drew 7,312.

One of the runs off Austin scored on an odd sacrifice fly. Earl Snyder popped out to the first baseman in foul territory. But Chris Coste scored from third when first baseman Jacob Cruz fell down after making the catch.

Up next: The Reds go to Clearwater to play the Philadelphia Phillies at 1:05 p.m. today. Chris Reitsma (0-2, 10.80 ERA) faces Brandon Duckworth (0-0, 0.00). The game will be on WLW-AM (700).
