San Diego's Nevin dislocates shoulder

Baseball notebook: Out indefinitely after being injured diving for ball

The Associated Press

TUCSON, Ariz. - The San Diego Padres lost another star Friday when slugger Phil Nevin dislocated his left shoulder.

The left fielder was injured while making a diving catch of Brian Daubach's sacrifice fly in the fourth inning of a 2-0 loss to the Chicago White Sox and is out indefinitely.

The Padres also will be without Trevor Hoffman, their All-Star closer, for the first half of the season because of shoulder surgery.

"I'm sick to my stomach," manager Bruce Bochy said. "It's devastating. It started with Trevor and now Phil."

Nevin, who was shifted to the outfield this season, batted .306 with 41 homers and 126 RBI on 2001. He missed 35 games last season with a broken left arm and had only 12 home runs and 57 RBI.

• Right-hander Brian Lawrence agreed to an $8.1 million, four-year contract with a team option for 2007.

Lawrence, 26, was the Padres' winningest pitcher last year and is to start this season's opener. He was 12-12 with two shutouts.

PHILLIES: Catcher Mike Lieberthal missed his sixth straight game Friday with an injury that appears to be hip-related.

Lieberthal is fine until he runs. "That's when I feel it," he said. "I can do everything but run."

The Phillies aren't concerned, saying the injury isn't related to operations Lieberthal had on his right knee in May 2001 and November 2002.

YANKEES: David Wells tested his tender left ankle during a bullpen session Friday while team officials pondered whether to discipline him over his autobiography,

Wells may be punished by the team for a book general manager Brian Cashman says "tarnishes the Yankees' image." Team president Randy Levine conferred Friday with Cashman, assistant general manager Jean Afterman and Wells' agent, Gregg Clifton.

CUBS: Sammy Sosa was back in the clubhouse Friday after missing several days with a respiratory virus that has ravaged the team.

"I'm alive again!" Sosa said, laughing. "I had a little bit of everything. Every time I coughed, I had a little bit of pain in my chest. But you can't keep a good man down!"

METS: Pitcher Pedro Astacio probably will begin the season on the disabled list with a sore right shoulder.

An MRI exam in New York on Friday revealed inflammation in Astacio's right biceps tendon. He won't throw for at least four to five days.

Astacio, the team's No. 3 starter behind Tom Glavine and Al Leiter, will take anti-inflammatory medication and won't resume throwing until the symptoms subside.

GAME REPORTS

Rockies starter Scott Elarton threw three scoreless innings and retired his first eight batters in a 3-0 loss to the Royals.

Elarton, acquired from Houston for Pedro Astacio in 2001, missed last season after having right shoulder surgery in March. He allowed one hit and struck out two.

Red Sox 6, Blue Jays 0

At Dunedin, Fla., Tim Wakefield allowed one hit in three innings and combined with five Boston relievers on a two-hitter.

Cardinals 13, Marlins 10

At Jupiter, Fla., St. Louis center fielder Jim Edmonds pulled a calf muscle and will miss at least two weeks, but Rick Ankiel pitched a perfect inning for the Cardinals.

Albert Pujols homered twice and drove in five runs, one day after hitting a grand slam and knocking in five runs against Montreal. Pujols is batting .360 with four homers and 15 RBIs this spring.

Mets (ss) 6, Tigers 5

At Lakeland, Fla., former Tigers first baseman Tony Clark went 4-for-4 with a two-run homer for New York. Damion Easley homered twice for Detroit.

Twins 9, Yankees 2

At Fort Myers, Fla., Dustan Mohr, Justin Morneau and Shane Andrews homered for Minnesota, and Joe Mays allowed one run and four hits in three innings.

Yankees starter Mike Mussina gave up two runs and four hits in three innings.

Expos 7, Phillies 3

At Clearwater, Fla., Orlando Hernandez allowed one hit in three shutout innings in his Montreal debut after missing his first scheduled start because of a toothache.

Phillies starter Randy Wolf threw four strong innings, allowing only a long homer to Vladimir Guerrero.

Astros 1, Devil Rays 0

At St. Petersburg, Fla., Wade Miller gave up two hits in three sharp innings and Henri Stanley hit an RBI double for Houston.

Dodgers 9, Orioles 4

At Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Darren Dreifort pitched pain-free in his first start since wrecking his right elbow in June 2001, settling down quickly to throw three innings for Los Angeles.

Braves (ss) 6, Indians 5

At Winter Haven, Fla., Mike Hampton allowed two earned runs in three innings and Andruw Jones hit a two-run double for Atlanta.

Mets (ss) 4, Braves (ss) 0

At Port St. Lucie, Fla., Mike Piazza hit his first home run of the spring and New York turned in its second consecutive shutout.

Cliff Floyd drove in two runs for the Mets, who learned that pitcher Pedro Astacio will probably begin the season on the disabled list with a sore right shoulder.

Rangers 5, Athletics 3

At Surprise, Ariz., Ryan Christenson, Gerald Laird and Michael Young hit consecutive home runs in the eighth for Texas in a game missing All-Star shortstops Miguel Tejada and Alex Rodriguez.

Angels 7, Brewers 2

At Tempe, Ariz., Tim Salmon hit his first homer of the spring and Darin Erstad went 3-for-3 with an RBI triple for Anaheim.

Angels closer Troy Percival made his spring debut, working a perfect fifth inning.

Diamondbacks 8, Cubs 0

At Mesa, Ariz., Randy Johnson struck out six in four innings and Luis Gonzalez hit his second homer of the spring.

Johnson has not allowed a run in nine innings this spring. Against the Cubs, he gave up one hit and walked one.

S

At Peoria, Ariz., Jamie Moyer allowed two runs in five innings but Seattle had its seven-game winning streak snapped.

Carlos Guillen and Mike Cameron hit two-run homers for the Mariners, and Ichiro Suzuki had a solo shot.
