JUPITER, Fla. - St. Louis manager Tony La Russa has left the team for several days to attend the trial of a defendant accused of assaulting one of his daughters.
Details of the crime against Bianca La Russa, 23, were not released by the team. La Russa said in a statement Monday that the trial begins this week for a crime that happened several years ago.
"I feel that it is important for me to join my family and give my daughter support during this difficult time," La Russa said.
ANGELS: Left-hander Jarrod Washburn, who led the Anaheim Angels in victories last year, hurt his left shoulder trying to avoid a collision during fielding practice Monday and expects to be sidelined for up to 10 days.
Washburn, 18-6 with a 3.15 ERA last season for the World Series champion Angels, was covering first base when he fell as he tried to avoid running into reliever Brendan Donnelly.
GAME REPORT: Frank Thomas doubled twice, drove in two runs and scored once as the Chicago White Sox beat the San Francisco Giants 3-1.
Thomas finished the day 2-for-3, his second multi-hit effort in three games.
"Any time we see him hit the ball the other way, that's a good sign," White Sox manager Jerry Manuel said. "He's working real hard. I think he's out to prove some people wrong."
Japanese slugger Hideki Matsui hit his second homer of the spring, a three-run shot for the New York Yankees in a 9-8 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.
Matsui went 3-for-3. He is 5-for-9 with two homers and five RBI in three spring training games.
"I didn't expect to start this way," Matsui said through an interpreter. "I feel a little more comfortable. When good results come out, that makes me feel better."
Jason Simontacchi and Dustin Hermanson each pitched two scoreless innings and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Mets 7-1 Monday.
Hideo Nomo gave up his first run of the spring, and Los Angeles went on to beat Florida 6-4. Nomo pitched three innings in his second appearance, allowing four hits in three innings.
Baltimore beat Montreal 2-1 despite getting only three hits. Expos starter Tony Armas pitched three hitless innings and struck out five.
Shane Reynolds, Houston's third starter, pitched three pain-free innings in his first game appearance since back surgery in June, and the Astros defeated Atlanta 5-2.
Reggie Sanders homered, drew a bases-loaded walk and drove in three runs in his first game with Pittsburgh, and the Pirates routed a Minnesota split squad 14-3. Sanders hit a long two-run homer in a five-run fifth inning that gave the Pirates a 9-1 lead.
Reigning Cy Young winners Randy Johnson and Barry Zito faced each other for the first time in Oakland's victory over Arizona.
Johnson pitched three shutout innings, giving up two hits and striking out three.
Zito allowed a run on three hits with no walks and two strikeouts in four innings.
