Reds 8, Pirates 3

Enquirer staff and wire services

BRADENTON, Fla. - Adam Dunn drove in two runs and Jimmy Haynes pitched two solid innings in his first outing of the spring as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-3 Sunday.

Haynes, who will start the first game at Cincinnati's Great American Ball Park on March 31 against Pittsburgh, allowed one run and one hit.

His first exhibition start was pushed back three days because of mild tendinitis in his pitching elbow. He walked one and struck out one.

Aramis Ramirez hit an RBI single in the first inning for Pittsburgh, then Haynes retired the side in order in the second.

Haynes was 15-10 for the Reds last year after going 8-17 for Milwaukee the previous season.

"I felt a little awkward in the first inning because I hadn't pitched in a game since last September and hadn't thrown much in the last week," Haynes said.

Dunn doubled and hit a sacrifice fly for Cincinnati. Kent Mercker pitched a scoreless inning for the win.

Salomon Torres, one of seven pitchers vying for one open spot in the Pirates' rotation, started and allowed an unearned run on one hit in three innings.

"I thought Salomon threw well," Pittsburgh manager Lloyd McClendon said.

Ryan Freel, an infielder in Reds' camp on a minor league contract, scored the tying run and drove in the go-ahead run as Cincinnati rallied from a 3-2 deficit.

Freel and Corky Miller hit back-to-back doubles in the seventh off Ryan Vogelsong, tying the score at 3. Freel then keyed a two-run eighth inning against Al Reyes that put Cincinnati ahead 5-3.

Wilton Guerrero started the eighth with a walk and moved to second on pinch-hitter Robin Jennings' two-out single. Freel singled home Guerrero with the go-ahead run, and Jennings moved to third.

Jennings followed by stealing home on the front end of a double steal to make it 5-3.

The Reds added three runs in the ninth off Mike Gonzalez.

Freel, Miller and Reggie Taylor had two hits each for Cincinnati.

Pittsburgh took a 3-2 lead in the sixth, scoring a run on shortstop Felipe Lopez's throwing error and another on a bases-loaded walk to Tike Redman from Felix Heredia.

The start was delayed 1 hour, 10 minutes by rain.

THE ARMS: Starter Jimmy Haynes walked the first batter he faced, but allowed only one other baserunner during his two-inning outing. Reliever Jose Acevedo followed Haynes and pitched two scoreless innings. John Riedling, who allowed three runs in one inning against the Red Sox on Friday, pitched a scoreless eighth.

THE BATS: Non-roster invitee Ryan Freel has impressed coaches with his speed and versatility. Freel went 2-for-3 with a double in the seventh and the go-ahead single in the eighth. Left fielder Adam Dunn went 1-for-1 with a double and two RBI. After his double in the second, Dunn was called out when he got caught between second and third on a groundball to the left side of the infield. Outfielder Emil Brown, a non-roster invitee and former Pirates prospect, had a two-run double in the ninth.

THE REST: First pitch was delayed 70 minutes because of rain. Fourteen pitchers total were used. With runners on first and third in the eighth, the Reds scored on a perfectly executed double steal.

UP NEXT: The Reds host the Phillies at 1:05 p.m. today at Ed Smith Stadium. A B-game against the Devil Rays is set for 10 a.m.
