Twins 6, Reds 4

SARASOTA, Fla. - Paul Wilson, projected as Cincinnati's fourth starter, had to be scratched because of a sore back, and the Minnesota Twins hit fill-in Chris Reitsma as they beat the Reds 6-4 on Saturday.

Wilson developed a sore back after pitching an inning of an intrasquad game Wednesday. Manager Bob Boone said he will be sidelined for a week to 10 days.

Reitsma took over and gave up a two-run homer in the first inning to Todd Sears that got the Twins rolling. They added four runs in the fourth off minor leaguer Josh Hall, pulling ahead 6-0.

With the bases loaded, Denny Hocking doubled home two runs, Tom Prince drove in a run with a groundout, and Shane Andrews singled home the final run.

Left-hander Brent Hoard gave up a two-out RBI single to Brandon Larson in the seventh, and Gookie Dawkins had an RBI groundout off Grant Balfour that made it 6-2 in the eighth.

Ben Ford gave up two more in the ninth, on Ryan Freel's double and Jacob Cruz's single.

The arms: Starter Chris Reitsma allowed a two-run homer to Twins first baseman Todd Sears in the first inning but retired the last four batters he faced. . . . Luke Hudson, Brian Reith, Travis Miller, Gabe White and closer Scott Williamson each pitched scoreless innings. Williamson attempted to barehand a comebacker in the ninth, but was not hurt.

The bats: Third baseman Brandon Larson, second baseman Gookie Dawkins, infielder Ryan Freel and pinch hitter Jacob Cruz each drove in a run. Freel's double was the Reds' only extra-base hit.

The rest: The Reds grounded into four double plays, including one each in the first three innings. . . . Center fielder Reggie Taylor was hit by a pitch in the seventh. . . . Announced attendance for the spring opener at Ed Smith Stadium was 4,483.

Up next: The Reds travel to Bradenton to play the Pirates at 1:05 p.m. today. Right-hander Jimmy Haynes is scheduled to start.
