The Reds signed outfielder Jose Guillen to a one-year, non-guaranteed $500,000 contract Wednesday.
Guillen was eligible for arbitration. His signing cuts the number of arbitration-eligible players to seven: Aaron Boone, Bruce Chen, Ryan Dempster, Elmer Dessens, Danny Graves, Jason LaRue and Scott Williamson.
Guillen, 26, signed with the Reds on Aug.20, three weeks after he was released by the Colorado Rockies.
He played 31 games for the Reds, including 25 starts. He hit .248 with four home runs and 16 RBI.
He took over right field for Austin Kearns after Kearns' season-ending hamstring injury. Guillen also played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and the Arizona Diamondbacks in his career.
His best years were with Pittsburgh in 1997 and '98. He hit .267 each of those years. He had 14 home runs and 70 RBI in '97 and 14 home runs and 84 RBI in '98.
