Cards must decide on Rolen

Enquirer wire services

ST. LOUIS - The Cardinals are waiting until today's deadline before announcing whether third baseman Scott Rolen, who sprained his left shoulder in Game 2 of the division series last Thursday, will be on the roster.

Manager Tony La Russa said he was pessimistic about Rolen's chances of playing in the series when he arrived at the stadium Tuesday. But La Russa's outlook had improved by the time he went home.

La Russa said he would “seriously consider” Rolen when he finalizes his roster this morning.

“It's really a tough call,” La Russa said after speaking with Rolen. “But I feel a little bit better about it right now.”

Rolen, who tied his career bests with 31 home runs and 110 RBIs this season, declined to give an update on his condition. On Monday he spoke optimistically of his progress.

“I'm not going to talk about it every day,” he said.
