FSN, Reds working to add 15 TV games

By John Fay, jfay@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

It isn't going to put them in the same ballpark as the New York Yankees, but the Reds are looking at a significant bump — $750,000 — in local television revenue next season.

The Reds are in the final stages of working out an agreement with Fox Sports Net to broadcast 15 more games in 2003.

“It's not been finalized,” said Reds chief operating officer John Allen. “But I'd be surprised if it didn't happen.”

FSN's general manager for Ohio, Steve Liverani, wouldn't comment.

The 15 additional games will push the total number broadcast from 85 to 100. All 15 of the added games will be road games. This past season, FSN did 40 home games and 45 road games. For 2003, the breakdown will be 40 home/60 road.

The Reds' package with Fox Sports Net, which has held exclusive local rights for the last four seasons, is believed to pay the team $5,000 per game.

The extra games would push the package from a total of $4.25 million to $5 million.

Allen wouldn't comment on the financial part of the deal.

“I think it's a good thing for the fans,” he said. “It's a win-win situation. Having more games on TV helps generate interest.”

Fox Sports, formerly SportsChannel, began carrying Reds games in 1991 and became the exclusive outlet in 1999.
