Pena guaranteed roster spot

By John Fay jfay@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Ready or not - and he's not - Wily Mo Pena will be on the Reds' roster next year.

Pena, a 20-year-old outfielder, hit .255 with 11 home runs and 47 RBI in 105 games at Double-A Chattanooga this season. He struck out 126 times.

The Yankees signed Pena to a $3.7 million major-league contract in 1999, and the deal states he must be on a big-league roster next season. The Reds obtained him in March 2001.

“He has a tremendous upside,” Reds general manager Jim Bowden said. “We're going to have to do a lot of his development in the Arizona Fall League and winter ball and with extra work.”
