Kearns eligible for other rookie award

By John Fay jfay@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

CHICAGO - Austin Kearns' hamstring injury that ended his season Aug. 27 also ended his chances to win the NL Rookie of the Year award. However, Kearns is a finalist for the Players Choice NL Outstanding Rookie Award.

Colorado pitcher Jason Jennings and Montreal outfielder Brad Wilkerson are the other finalists for the award voted on by the players.

        Kearns' numbers (.315, 13 homers, 56 RBI) compare well with Wilkerson's (.263, 19 homers, 55 RBI). Jennings is 16-8 with a 4.52 ERA.

BONUS: Scott Williamson has met all the incentives in his contract. That means his salary goes from $400,000 to $600,000. His 60th appearance got him to the incentives, which were based on appearances.

Williamson made his career-high 63rd appearance Thursday.

NO WORD: The Reds still haven't announced a decision on their coaches. All six are in the last year of their contracts.

Reds general manager Jim Bowden is on the trip.

“We haven't talked,” hitting coach Jim Lefebvre said. “Nobody has.”

JOSE & EDDIE: Eddie Vedder, the lead singer of Pearl Jam and a Jose Cardenal fan, got to meet the former Cub and current Reds first base coach before Thursday's Reds-Cubs game.

        “He's so cool,” Vedder said.

Vedder, who sometimes wears a Cardenal jersey during concerts, explained the connection:

“I was living in Evanston (Ill.) in 1972. My mom gave me $4. I took like two busses to get here (to Wrigley). I bought a seat in the bleachers for $1.50. Jose stole a base and dove into the ivy to make a catch. I've been a fan ever since.”
