LaRue irks Boone by hiding injury
By John Fay jfay@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer
CHICAGO - Reds manager Bob Boone is all for guys toughing it out. But he would like to have known about Jason LaRue's hernia sooner.
He could have done more damage, Boone said. That would have meant more time recovering.
LaRue kept the hernia to himself until he was kicked in the leg in the final game of the series in Pittsburgh last week.
The hernia was repaired in an one-hour surgical procedure by Dr. Joann Lohr on Tuesday. LaRue should be able to begin working out in the eight weeks.
He's expected to recover in time for spring training.
With us out of (the pennant race), Boone said, I would have gotten him out (of the lineup) sooner. There's no reason to risk it.
Corky Miller was recalled from Triple-A Louisville to take LaRue's roster spot.
Kelly Stinnett will get the bulk of the playing time over the final six games.
Miller hasn't played since Louisville's season ended Sept.2.
Miller played 37 games with the Reds this year. He hit .250 with three home runs and 15 RBI.
I usually don't start working out until October, he said. I was helping my little brother (Micah, 10) getting ready for baseball. I'll be ready after a day.
MOEHLER TO START: Brian Moehler goes into the TBA spot in the Reds rotation. He'll start Saturday's game in the Montreal.
I was pretty impressed with the way he threw (his last start), Boone said. He had a lot more arm speed than he did before we shut him down.
Moehler spent 15 days on the disabled list, getting over a dead-arm period.
PLAYING IT STRAIGHT: Boone plans to play his A lineup for the most part over the final six games, although Montreal's notoriously bad turf may affect that somewhat.
With the turf, I may give (Ken Griffey Jr.) a day off, Boone said.
KEARNS UPDATE: Austin Kearns, on the DL since Aug.27 with a strained hamstring, could return in the next couple days. He's close to being able to pinch hit, Boone said. But I'd hate to have him hurt it again.
That's Kearns' concern as well: I don't want to start over with rehab again. It's better, but it's not fully healed.
MINOR TRANSACTION: The Reds sent minor-league right-hander Jorge Cordova to the Detroit Tigers to complete the July23 trade for right-hander Brian Moehler and minor-leaguer Matt Boone.
The original deal was for former No.1 pick David Espinosa and two players to be named later.
The Reds sent outfielder Noochie Varner to the Tigers on Aug.28.
Cordova, 24, was obtained in July 2000 in exchange for right-hander Manny Aybar.
Cordova was 4-0 with a 0.40 ERA at Single-A Stockton, and 4-2 (3.99) with 13 saves at Double-A Chattanooga.
UP NEXT: The Reds play the Cubs in the second game of the three-game series at 8:05 p.m. today. Right-hander Ryan Dempster (9-13, 5.54) faces fellow right-hander Matt Clement (12-10, 3.34).
