Reds coaches await word

Knight says he'd return, but it's up to Boone

By John Fay jfay@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

PITTSBURGH - Ray Knight is pleased with his return to coaching and would like to come back next season.

“There's a lot of young talent,” the Reds' bench coach said. “I want to be around to watch them grow.”

Reds manager Bob Boone said he hasn't made any decisions on the coaching staff. Contracts for all six coaches are up.

“We'll talk about it on the road trip,” Boone said.

Knight, hitting coach Jim Lefebvre and first base coach Jose Cardenal are new to the staff this year. Lefebvre has indicated he'd like to return. Cardenal, a late replacement for Ken Griffey Sr., is undecided.

Knight, of course, was the Reds' manager in 1996 and part of 1997 before being fired.

“I really enjoyed working with Bob,” Knight said. “He's so good to us. I've learned a lot. I used to be so critical. I think being raised in the Reds organization, mistakes and sloppy play are just unacceptable to you. I've learned to be more patient.”
