Santiago suspended for bumping umpire

Baseball notebook

The Associated Press

NEW YORK - San Francisco Giants catcher Benito Santiago was suspended for two games Wednesday by the commissioner's office, which said he bumped umpire Mark Hirschbeck last weekend.

Santiago, who also was fined by baseball vice president Bob Watson, was ejected during an argument in the ninth inning of Sunday's 4-1 loss to San Diego along with manager Dusty Baker and pitching coach Dave Righetti.

The players' association appealed the penalty, meaning the suspension can't start until after a hearing before Bob DuPuy, baseball's chief operating officer.

PHILLIES: A $22 million stadium will keep Philadelphia and one of its minor-league affiliates in Clearwater, Fla. for at least 20 more years.

The spring training facility, which will seat 7,000, got final city approval after a search for a new location and lengthy negotiations delayed the agreement.

The new complex will move the Phillies out of their longtime home at 47-year-old Jack Russell Stadium near downtown.

SHORT HOPS: Arizona entered Wednesday 92-58 overall but just 39-45 when Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling don't start.

Robb Nen worked a 1-2-3 ninth in Tuesday night's victory over Los Angeles to earn his 39th save in 47 chances. It was his 310th career save, tying Goose Gossage for 12th place on the all-time list.
