Reds notes: Boone rests

By John Fay, jfay@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Aaron Boone, the only Red to play all 151 games going into Wednesday, was not in the starting lineup. “He's beat down,” Bob Boone said. “He laid back on one ball (Tuesday night). His bat is a little draggy.”

Aaron missed six starts before Wednesday, but each time he entered the game in the late innings.

Bob Boone said before Wednesday's game that could be the case again.

“I don't know if I'll be able to keep him out all night,” he said.

WHITE UPDATE: Left-hander Gabe White, on the disabled list since Aug. 29 with a left groin pull, threw 25 pitches in a simulated game Wednesday.

“It was OK,” White said. “I guess the best thing is I didn't hurt myself again. But it didn't go as good as I expected or hoped. I could still feel it.”

Boone didn't think the session was bad.

“I thought he was throwing pretty well,” Boone said.

The Reds hoped to activate White Friday. That's not going to happen. Instead, White will throw another simulated session again Friday.

If that goes well, he could be activated Saturday.

MOEHLER ENCOURAGED: Lost in Tuesday's 11-3 debacle was a pretty good return by Brian Moehler.

Moehler started for the first time since coming off the disabled list. He went 3 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run.

“I felt good,” Moehler said. “I finally got the extension. I had good arm speed.”

It looks like Moehler will meet his goal.

“After having surgery (July 4), the only thing I wanted to do was get through this year healthy,” he said. “I don't have to worry about rehabbing. I know I have a good shot at pitching well next year.”

Whether Moehler, a free agent, stays with the Reds remains to be seen.

“I haven't even thought about it,” Moehler said.

UP NEXT: The Reds finish the four-game series with the Pirates tonight. Right-hander Ryan Dempster (9-13, 5.60 ERA) faces right-hander Brian Meadows (1-6, 4.01). The game is on Fox Sports Net.
