Mariners 3, Rangers 2

SEATTLE — Carlos Guillen became the latest Seattle player to give a little extra at Safeco Field. Guillen hit a two-out single that scored pinch-runner Jose Offerman in the 10th inning and gave the Mariners a 3-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night.
Arthur Rhodes (9-4) pitched 1 2-3 innings for Seattle, seven games behind Oakland in the AL wild-card race with 11 games left.
The Mariners improved to 6-0 in extra-inning games at home.
“We just seem to have that extra bit of confidence when it goes past the ninth inning here,” Guillen said.
John Olerud led off the 10th with a single off Rich Rodriguez (3-2) and Offerman pinch-ran. He took second on Bret Boone's sacrifice, moved to third on an infield out and scored on Guillen's drive off C.J. Nitkowski, which bounced off the center-field wall.
Guillen's shot sailed over the head of Donnie Saddler, who was playing shallow. Guillen saw Sadler's positioning.
“I just wanted to drive the ball and hit it hard somewhere,” Guillen said.
Rangers manager Jerry Narron defended the positioning of Sadler, who was a defensive substitute in the eighth inning.
“We brought him in a couple of steps. I'd rather have him defend a ball in front of him than defend a ball at the warning track,” Narron said.
With the score 2-all in the ninth, Edgar Martinez walked with two outs after falling behind 0-2 in the count. Jay Powell argued about the strike zone and was ejected by plate umpire John Hirschbeck. Luis Ugueto ran for Martinez and was thrown out trying to steal second base.
Seattle also had runners on first and second with no outs in the eighth, but Guillen flied out. and pinch-hitters Ruben Sierra and Desi Relaford fouled out.
Texas starter Chan Ho Park allowed two runs — one earned — five hits and eight walks in eight innings.
Seattle's Ryan Franklin, made his 10th career start, struck out a career-high nine and walked two in 8 1-3 innings. He retired his first 14 batters before Carl Everett's looping single into shallow left field.
Boone got his 99th RBI when he walked with the bases loaded in the first after Park walked two batters and hit another. John Olerud added a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Texas tied the score in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Michael Young and an RBI single by Alex Rodriguez, who stopped an 0-for-12 slide.
“It was a big situation because I haven't been making good contact,” Rodriguez said.
Notes: After Rodriguez fouled a ball into the first-base stands in the sixth inning, a fan threw the ball back onto the field and nearly hit him. On the next pitch, Rodriguez singled. ... The Rangers had their second consecutive game without a home run after homering in 32 of their previous 33 games. ... Cameron stole his 30th base, most on the Mariners.
