When is a start not a start?

MILWAUKEE Danny Graves is going to start Tuesday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. But please don't call him a starter.
I still want to be part of the bullpen corps for now, Graves said. I don't want to say I'm in the starting rotation.
Semantics are big to Graves on this. Tuesday is officially a bullpen day. But Graves will be the first reliever to work.
The Reds plan to do the same thing for the other three starts the fifth starter would have made. Graves probably will go first in the other three as well.
But I'm not wedded to that, Reds manager Bob Boone said.
Graves had to be convinced to make the move. Boone says Graves will not build up his pitch count each time out. Graves will be limited to 50-55 pitches.
This is kind of a compromise, Boone said.
Said Graves: This isn't so much seeing if I can start. It allows other guys to try out for the closer role.
Scott Williamson, John Riedling and Joey Hamilton probably will get a whirl at closing.
The plan is to have Graves prepare in the offseason as a starter and start games in spring training. Unless he struggles, he'll be in the rotation next year.
One footnote here: Boone also likes the idea of Riedling, one of the candidates to close, starting.
