Dunn gets K record

By John Fay, jfay@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Adam Dunn equaled Mike Cameron's club record for strikeouts Thursday in St. Louis.

Entering Saturday's game, he had gone seven straight plate appearances without a whiff.

He was asked before Saturday's game if he were trying to keep from breaking the strikeout mark. Dunn answered in his usual happy-go-lucky way.

“If I've come this far, I might as well break it,” he said.

He didn't waste time, taking a called third strike in the first inning Saturday against Glendon Rusch.

Dunn struck out exactly 100 times each of the last two seasons.

He thinks he can cut down on the K's in the future.

“Absolutely,” he said. “I know I will. I'll be more aggressive early in the count.”

That would cut down on Dunn's walks. He entered Saturday with 117 walks, second to Barry Bonds in the majors.

“It will (cut down on the walks),” Dunn said. “But if I hit the ball half of the time I strike out, I'm going to get some cheap hits, especially with two outs.”

NEW RUSH: Hamilton felt different entering Friday night's game than he had in his other 294 big-league appearances.

That's because a save was on the line.

“It was a rush, and not what I'd call a good rush,” he said. “You start rushing and flying open (in your delivery).”

        Hamilton converted the save.

The Reds are looking at Hamilton as a possible closer. That's a departure from being a starter as he has his whole career.

“Starting, you don't get a rush except in certain situations,” he said. “Closing, you get it every damn game.”

CASEY, GRIFFEY: Sean Casey and Ken Griffey Jr. were out of the lineup again Saturday. Boone said he has no “immediate plans” to play either. Both pinch hit Friday night.

HELP WANTED: With Brandon Larson out for the year with a broken hand and Griffey and Casey ailing, the Reds are short-handed.

The Reds can add players as they wish because it's September and the roster limit is 40.

        Would Boone like more help?

Obviously, he would. But it's a budget issue.

UP NEXT: The Reds conclude the three-game series and the season series with the Brewers at 2:05 p.m. today. Right-hander Jimmy Haynes (13-9, 4.12 ERA) takes on right-hander Nick Neugebauer.
