Reds chatter
Hittin' hurtin'
Enquirer staff and news services
The Reds have had plenty of struggles, particularly with the bats, as they've fallen out of the playoff picture.
And if it seems to you they score and then go long stretches without scoring again, you'd be right.
The Reds' victory Friday gave them a 2-5 record in their past seven games.
In the 66 innings the Reds batted in those seven games:
the Reds went scoreless in 55 innings;
had five one-run innings;
had two two-run innings;
had two three-run innings;
had one four-run inning;
had one five-run inning.
In addition:
In three of the games, the Reds scored in one inning only. In the other four games, they scored in only two innings. It's a wonder they managed to win twice.
This 'n' that
A few blurbs while wondering whatever happened to Chico Ruiz:
The Reds have all but decided to make Danny Graves a starter next season. Oddly, that comes on the heels of him improving his save totals for four consecutive seasons 27, 30, 32 and, entering the weekend, 31.
Adam Dunn has set the Reds' single-season record for strikeouts and is in reach of the mark walks. Dunn struck out in his first at-bat Saturday to break Mike Cameron's record of 145 in 1999. Dunn entered Saturday 19 walks shy of Joe Morgan's 132 in 1975.
The Reds are looking as if they'll have a home attendance decrease for a second straight year.
The Reds are averaging 23,011 per home date, 22nd in baseball. They averaged 23,208 last season, after the Ken Griffey Jr.-induced average of 31,431 in 2000.
The Reds' road average is sixth-highest at 30,544 this season. Hmmmmm.
Barry Larkin's error Friday night was only his ninth of the season.
Larkin entered the day leading all National League shortstops in fielding percentage at .984.
Larkin's double-play partner, Todd Walker, is second in the NL among second basemen at .987.
