Expos ponder fate
Baseball notebook
The Associated Press
Stay or go? Montreal would like to know. After owners ratified the new labor agreement Thursday, Expos president Tony Tavares expects commissioner Bud Selig will turn his attention to the team's future.
There are two general options: stay or move. Then if you move, where to and how fast can you do it? Tavares said. I would say our fate will be determined over the next 10 days or so.
With low attendance, little local broadcasting money and only slight prospects for a new ballpark, the Expos were the leading candidate for contraction. Thursday, they drew an announced crowd of 2,134, the smallest since Olympic Stadium opened in 1977.
But under the new labor agreement, no franchise can be folded through the 2006 season. So baseball's 29 other clubs must decide whether to keep the Expos in Montreal and continue subsidizing them or allow them to move.
PHILLIES: The team purchased the contract of right-hander Jose Santiago, and right-hander Robert Person was moved from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL.
Santiago was 1-3 with a 7.15 ERA in 36 games with the Phillies earlier this season. He went 3-2 with seven saves and a 1.29 ERA in 22 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
ASTROS: Houston sent infielder Keith Ginter to Milwaukee to complete last week's trade for infielder Mark Loretta.
Ginter, 26, hit .264 with 12 homers and 54 RBI this season for Triple-A New Orleans. To make room for him, the Brewers placed Alex Sanchez, who has a broken ankle, on the 60-day disabled list.
DIAMONDBACKS: Right-hander Armando Reynoso was activated for the first time this season. He was 1-6 with a 5.98 ERA last season before having surgery to repair a disk in his neck.
YANKEES: Closer Mariano Rivera, out because of a right shoulder strain, expects to begin a throwing program in the next couple days.
Maybe tomorrow, I start throwing a little bit, Rivera said at the team's minor-league complex in Tampa, Fla. The All-Star reliever, 1-4 this season with 27 saves, is on the disabled list for the third time this season and hasn't played since Aug.19.
