A-Rod hits two homers to reach 50

The Associated Press

BALTIMORE — Alex Rodriguez homered in his first two at-bats Thursday night, becoming the first player to reach 50 home runs this season.

The Texas Rangers shortstop hit a two-run drive in the first inning off Baltimore's Jason Johnson, and added a solo shot off Johnson in the third.

Rodriguez, who hit 52 last year, is the fifth player in major league history to record successive 50-homer seasons. He joins Babe Ruth, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and Ken Griffey Jr.

It was the ninth multihomer game of the season for Rodriguez and the 29th of his career.

A-Rod needs 30 more hits to become the first major leaguer with two 50-homer, 200-hit seasons.
