Casey may call it a year

Shoulder injury needs time to heal

The Cincinnati Enquirer

ST. LOUIS - Sean Casey was out of the lineup for Wednesday night's game against the St.Louis Cardinals. When and if he'll return is not certain. Shutting it down for the year will be considered.

Casey has a slight tear in the muscle group of his left rotator cuff, which is affecting his swing (he's 1-for-his-last-17). A cortisone shot didn't help.

“The only way to get it 100 percent is to rest six to eight weeks,” Casey said.

That would mean sitting out the rest of the season.

“We haven't ruled that out,” Casey said.

Reds medical director Dr. Tim Kremchek said Casey faces arthroscopic surgery.

“We know he has the muscle tear,” Kremchek said. “But we want to make sure there's nothing else wrong.”

When Casey shuts it down hasn't been determined.

“That's something Casey, myself, (Reds manager) Bob Boone and (Reds general manager) Jim Bowden will have to sit down and talk about,” Kremchek said.

Boone told Casey Tuesday that he was going to rest him Wednesday. Today's an off day.

“That gives him two days off,” Boone said. “We'll see what the weekend brings. I'm taking it day to day.”

Casey was on the disabled list July 23-Aug.9. When he first came back, he was able to play without pain.

“It flared up a couple of weeks ago,” he said.

With the National League Central all but lost, Casey doesn't feel as compelled to play through the pain.

“It's been an interesting year,” Casey said. “We were in the pennant race the whole year. I wasn't 100 percent, but I still felt I could help the team. I wouldn't have gone out there if I thought I was hurting the team.”

Casey's average sits at .262, 49 points below his career mark entering this year. He has six home runs and 42 RBI. He has doubled those totals in each of his three full seasons with the Reds.
