Boone, Larson future DP combo?

By John Fay jfay@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

ST. LOUIS - Aaron Boone and Brandon Larson will go to the Instructional League when the season ends so Boone can work at shortstop and Larson can work at second base.

Boone has started 13 games at shortstop this season.

“This will give me a chance to work on the fundamentals and hopefully play a few games in a row,” he said.

        Larson needs more work.

“I've played a few games at second in my whole baseball career,” he said.

Larson played shortstop in college, so the move shouldn't be too difficult. But Todd Walker, the incumbent second baseman, is under contract for 2003.

“It gives them another option with me,” Larson said.

Larson thinks he'll be 100 percent by the time he reports to the IL. His broken toe limits him to pinch-hitting for now.

“Every time I try to plant, I get a sharp pain,” he said.
