Reds Notebook: Moehler goes on DL

The Cincinnati Enquirer
Brian Moehler, who had shoulder surgery July 4 last year, is going through what is known as the dead-arm period. The Reds put
Moehler on the disabled list Wednesday because of irritation in his rotator cuff.
I don't have any pain, Moehler said. I talked to other guys who had the surgery. They say you go through this. I just have a little bit of a dead arm. They thought it was best I shut it down and strengthen it.
Moehler had back-to-back bad outings. He allowed three runs in 2 1/3 innings Tuesday after allowing six runs in two innings the start before.
I think he's going to be a good pitcher, Reds manager Bob Boone said. It's a matter of time.
Whether he'll be a good pitcher with the Reds is subject to negotiation. Moehler will become a free agent after this season.
There are too many variables involved (to say whether he'll be back or not), Boone said.
TAYLOR FIRST: Reggie Taylor got the first crack at being the replacement for injured outfielder Austin Kearns.
He has done a pretty good job for us, Boone said of Taylor. He'll get the first chance - at least against left-handers.
Ruben Mateo and Jose Guillen, the player called up to take Kearns' roster spot, will get some playing time. Russell Branyan, who like Taylor hits left-handed, will also play.
It's a matter of who steps up, Boone said.
RIGHT, CENTER: Taylor played center field and Ken Griffey Jr. right when Taylor entered the game to replace Kearns on Tuesday. But Griffey started in center and Taylor was in right Wednesday.
I left it up to Junior, Boone said. He said he preferred center.
GUILLEN'S CHANCE: Guillen is only 26 years old. He was once considered one of the Pittsburgh Pirates' top prospects.
But he fell out of favor - he says for showing up late for spring training - and was traded to Tampa Bay in 1999.
Injuries slowed him in 2000 and 2001, and the Devil Rays released him after last season.
Arizona signed him as free agent before this season.
They told me I'd play every day if anyone got hurt, Guillen said. Then Danny Bautista got hurt. I played four games. Then I went 0-for-4 and didn't play for 15 days.
After Arizona released him, Colorado picked him up. But he asked for his release there and was ready to go back to the Dominican Republic and call it a season.
My agent (Adam Katz) told me I better come play for Cincinnati, he said. They might call me up in September.
Guillen is a player Reds general manager Jim Bowden wanted for some time.
I just want a chance, Guillen said.
UP NEXT: The Reds wrap up the four-game series with the Cardinals - and possibly the season, if there's a strike - with a 12:35 p.m. contest today. Reds right-hander Jimmy Haynes (12-8, 4.40 ERA) faces St.Louis right-hander Woody Williams (6-3, 2.35).
