Reitsma sent down after win

By John Fay jfay@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Chris Reitsma's reward for winning the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the St.Louis Cardinals was a ticket to Chattanooga, Tenn.

Reitsma, the second-year Reds right-hander, was optioned to Double-A Chattanooga between games to make room for righty Elmer Dessens, who started the second contest.

Reitsma entered the first game in the third inning, relieving starter Brian Moehler. Reitsma went 3 2/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits.

“Reitsma was awesome,” Reds closer Danny Graves said. “He ate up those innings.”

Reitsma had only pitched one other time since being recalled from Triple-A Louisville on Aug. 20. He started against Arizona on Thursday, going five innings and allowing five runs on five hits in a 6-3 loss to the Diamondbacks.

Reitsma's stay in Chattanooga will be short since the Lookouts end their season Aug.31. That's the reason he was sent there instead of Louisville. He will be brought back to the Reds on Sept.1 when rosters are expanded from 25 to 40.

SITTING, WISHING: John Riedling wants the ball, but because he's on the disabled list, he won't get it until Sept.4.

“I really wish I could pitch right now,” the Reds right-hander said. “It stinks missing such a big series.”

Riedling is on the DL with a strained groin muscle. He's begun throwing but not off a mound.

“I've got some time,” he said, “so I don't want to rush it.”

Riedling didn't make the trip last week to Arizona and Houston. Instead, he rehabbed the injury at the TriHealth Clinic.

“He's doing really well,” Reds medical director Tim Kremchek said. “He's right on target to come off the DL when he's eligible.”

WILLY ROLLING: Scott Williamson pitched one scoreless inning in the Reds' first-game win Tuesday, extending the right-hander's streak of scoreless appearances to seven. He has pitched 9 1/3 innings in that span.

Since the All-Star break, Williamson has a 1.53 ERA. He has pitched 23 1/3 innings, allowing 12 hits and striking out 27.

LARSON TO LOUISVILLE: Brandon Larson, on the disabled list with a broken right toe, will begin a rehab assignment today at Louisville. The third baseman/outfielder has been able to take batting practice for about a week.

“He's doing a lot better than I thought he would,” Kremchek said. “He feels good and he wants to play.”

Larson is eligible to come off the DL on Sunday.

FARM REPORT: Left-hander Lance Davis (3-3) had another good outing for Louisville, allowing one run on six hits in seven innings.

The Bats lost 6-2 to Indianapolis after right-hander Luke Hudson gave up four runs on five hits in the eighth inning. It was Hudson's first outing since returning to Louisville from the Reds.

UP NEXT: The Reds play the Cardinals in the third game of their four-game series today at 7:10 p.m. Reds left-hander Shawn Estes (4-10, 4.56 ERA) takes on St.Louis right-hander Garrett Stephenson (1-4, 6.67). The game will be televised on ESPN2.
