MILWAUKEE — Randy Wolf is being compared by his manager to a young Tom Glavine and Jamie Moyer.
Wolf certainly showed why Thursday, allowing four hits in eight innings and hitting his first career home run to lead the Philadelphia Phillies past the Milwaukee Brewers 7-0 Thursday.
Wolf (9-7) struck out seven and walked four as the Brewers fell to 7-20 against left-handers this season. The Phillies are 6-0 in Wolf's last six starts, including a 4-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals last Friday.
“His numbers at this stage of the game are better than Glavine's or Moyer's at their stage of the game,” Philadelphia manager Larry Bowa said.
Wolf, now 36-36 in 103 starts since joining the Phillies in 1999, took the praise in stride.
“To me, it's unfair to be in the same sentence as a Hall of Famer,” Wolf said about Glavine, who was 33-41 in 105 starts in his first four seasons with Atlanta. “It's a complement but it's hard to be in the same sentence as him.”
Moyer was 32-43 in 94 starts in his first four seasons with the Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers.
Pat Burrell and Placido Polanco hit solo home runs for the Phillies, who pounded Milwaukee pitchers for 27 hits and 20 runs in winning twice after losing 3-2 Tuesday in the series opener.
Milwaukee advanced only two runners past second base. The only hits by the Brewers were a double by Ryan Thompson and singles by Robert Machado, Lenny Harris and Eric Young.
Harris and Young singled and Alex Sanchez walked to load the bases with one out in the eighth but Wolf struck out Richie Sexson and Jose Hernandez to end the threat.
Sexson was 0-for-11 in the series and is in a 0-for-13 slump
“He swung at pitches out of the strike zone and that got him in trouble today,” manager Jerry Royster said of Sexson. “He's missed some opportunities to drive in runs and nothing eats at him more than that.”
Carlos Silva finished the four-hitter.
The Phillies took a 3-0 lead in the first inning against left-hander Jimmy Osting (0-1), making his second start with the Brewers. With one out, Polanco hit a solo home run. Following two walks, Mike Lieberthal tripled.
On Lieberthal's slicing liner, right fielder Izzy Alcantara made an ill-advised dive for the ball, which bounded past him into the corner as Lieberthal easily made it to third.
Wolf hit his home run in the second and Burrell's 31st of the season made it 5-0 in the third.
Back-to-back doubles by Bobby Abreu and Burrell to start the sixth made it 6-0 and ended the day for Osting, who allowed six runs. All but one of the seven hits Osting allowed was for extra bases.
“I was behind in the count a lot, and that makes everybody a better hitter,” Osting said. “They really made me pay for that.”
“He had no success at all sustaining anything,” Royster said. “They hit fastballs, curves, changeups ... it was a tough game for him.”
Notes: The Phillies have hit at least one home run in nine straight games. ... Philadelphia leads the NL in doubles with 255. Abreu's double was his 40th and he became the first Phillie since Ed Delahanty in 1895-97 to hit that many in three straight seasons. ... Osting, who pitched 4 2-3 scoreless innings in his debut with the Brewers last week in Pittsburgh, threw 42 pitches in the first inning Thursday. ... Lieberthal had only one triple in his previous three seasons, that coming in 1999. He has two this year. ... The Brewers altered their batting lineup, moving Sexson to third and Hernandez to cleanup. Sexson has batted fourth in 120 of the 123 games in which he's played this season. It didn't work as the two combined to go 0-for-7 with five strikeouts.
