HOUSTON - The Chicago Cubs traded right-hander Tom Gordon to the Houston Astros on Thursday for a minor-league pitcher and two players to be named later.
This is a good team, a good organization, Gordon said before the teams faced each other at Minute Maid Park. This will be good for me to be in this situation.
Gordon was one of the Cubs' more consistent relievers, going 1-1 with a 3.42 ERA since coming off the disabled list July2. He hasn't allowed a run in his last 82/3 innings.
In exchange for Gordon, the Cubs got left-hander Russ Rohlicek, 9-5 with a 2.98 ERA at Single-A Michigan.
A'S: Oakland reliever Jim Mecir was suspended for three games Thursday for hitting Chicago White Sox shortstop Royce Clayton with a pitch last week after a warning had been issued. Mecir will appeal the decision.
ANGELS: Anaheim placed right fielder Tim Salmon on the 15-day disabled list with a bruised left hand. He has been out of the lineup since being hit by a pitch Aug.10 in Toronto. The move was made retroactive to Aug.14.
BRAVES: Right-hander Jason Marquis was forced out of Atlanta's game with the San Diego Padres after being hit on the left calf by a line drive in the third inning. Marquis had a bruised calf.
INDIANS: Catcher Einar Diaz left Cleveland's game in the first inning after his right hand was stepped on during a play at home plate by Oakland A's outfielder David Justice. There was no word on the extent of Diaz's injury.
RED SOX: Boston center fielder Johnny Damon dislocated his right index finger sliding back into first base and was listed as day to day. Rickey Henderson pinch ran and stayed in the game in left field.
YANKEES: New York outfielder Bernie Williams wasn't in the starting lineup against the Anaheim Angels because of a mild left hamstring strain.
