Bowden may face another fine
Reds general manager Jim Bowden and New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner may be fined by baseball commissioner Bud Selig for making comments related to the current labor negotiations.
Selig has ordered officials to be silent on labor issues and has set a $1 million fine for violations of his rule. Selig did not say Tuesday if he intends to fine team officials who have not complied with his silence mandate, the New York Times reported. A baseball official told the newspaper that Selig would review everything and do something.
The Times also reported that Selig fined Bowden $50,000 for insensitive remarks made about the union and the Sept. 11 attacks, and that the union interceded on Bowden's behalf in an attempt to persuade Selig not to penalize him.
Major League Baseball spokesman Pat Courtney told the Enquirer on Wednesday that the fine was not $50,000 but would not say whether the total was higher or lower. Courtney also said he was not aware of any attempt by the union to convince Selig not to fine Bowden.
