Reds chatter
Rook on a roll
Austin Kearns' three-hit game Friday increased his batting average to .305. The 22-year-old Kearns entered Saturday leading all National League rookies in average, hits (102), RBI (50), doubles (23), on-base percentage (.402) and slugging percentage (.467).
He leads Reds regulars in batting with runners in scoring position at .272 (25-for-92). And he has been an excellent outfielder. His competition for the NL rookie-of-the-year award appears to be pitchers Kazuhisa Ishii of the Dodgers (13-7, 4.00 ERA) and Jason Jennings of the Rockies (13-5, 4.17).
Thunder and lightning
Aaron Boone entered Saturday needing two homers to reach the 25-homer, 25-stolen base club. Here are the players in Reds history to reach that plateau:
Barry Larkin, 1996
Reggie Sanders, 1995
Chris Sabo, 1990
Eric Davis, 1986, '87, '88
Kal Daniels, 1987
Joe Morgan, 1973, '76
Walk in the park
Adam Dunn, the Reds' other 22-year-old stud, joined some exclusive company when he walked for the 100th time this season. Here are the last five players to reach 100 walks before the age of 23 (with their age and season they reached 100):
Dunn 106 walks, age 22, 2002
Rickey Henderson 117, 21, 1980
Eddie Mathews 113, 22, 1954
Mickey Mantle 102, 22, 1954
Ted Williams 122, 22, 1941
Crowd pleasers
The Reds' average home attendance through 60 home dates was 23,500. That figure ranks 20th in the major leagues and represents 58.8 percent of the capacity of Cinergy Field.
The big-league leader in average per game is, not surprisingly, the Yankees at 44,684 (through 56 dates). The Giants, meanwhile, fill their park the best. Their average attendance of 40,209 for 59 dates represents 98.6 percent of capacity.
The stat sheet
Before the All-Star Game, the Reds were 46-41 with a 4.04 ERA. Since the break, they're 16-17, 4.70.
The Reds entered Saturday having been outscored by their opponents 562-558 and still were only 4 1/2 games out of first place.
Boone leads the Reds with 32 multiple-hit games.
