Dessens' return delayed
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Elmer Dessens won't be returning Saturday when he's first eligible to come off the disabled list.
Manager Bob Boone said he expects Dessens to be back by next Thursday. Dessens is suffering from a strained groin.
I want him to be at full strength when we get him back, Boone said.
NO GO FOR RIJO: Jose Rijo, a day after being told he would be starting Saturday, is back in the bullpen.
Newcomer Shawn Estes will get the start Saturday. Boone told Rijo of the change moments before the trade was announced.
ZEROED IN: Reds player representative Aaron Boone will participate in a conference call today in which the union will probably set a strike date.
He is heating up at the plate even as his labor duties continue to increase. Boone entered play Thursday having hit .307 in his last 44 games, and 16 of his last 19 hits went for extra bases.
I don't think it's that big of a distraction, he said of his duties. It's not like it's taking me away for long periods or is overly strenuous.
SURGERIES: Right-hander Luis Pineda underwent arthroscopic surgery Thursday to repair a torn labrum and torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder. He is expected to miss 9-12 months.
Right-hander Scott MacRae, who has pitched this season at Triple-A Louisville, underwent Tommy John surgery Thursday to repair a torn ulner collateral ligament, and also had surgery on a torn forearm muscle. He is also expected to miss 9-12 months.
Both surgeries were per formed by Reds medical director Tim Kremchek at Good Samaritan Hospital.
GRAVES PARK: A West Side ball field will soon bear the name of the Reds closer.
Danny Graves Field in Cleves will be dedicated Saturday at 1 p.m.
Graves and the Reds Community Fund donated $5,000 toward the project.
The field will be laid out with the same dimensions as Cinergy Field, complete with dugouts and an outfield wall. The field will be part of a four-field complex, located on U.S. 50 at Bridgetown Road.
I've gone to other stadiums and saw the fields named for players, Graves said. I thought that would be pretty cool. I'm excited. I hope it encourages kids to play baseball.
SEPTEMBER CALL-UPS: Reds general manager Jim Bowden said it has not been determined how many players will be added to the roster Sept.1.
STAND-UP GUY: Ken Griffey Jr. summoned media members before the game to watch him address Adam Dunn and Austin Kearns. I want to apologize to them for (teasing about) baserunning, Griffey said.
Griffey wore a sheepish smile. He had gotten on them Wednesday for baserunning gaffes in Tuesday's game, but then Wednesday night he was picked off first base.
DOWN ON THE FARM: Chris Reitsma improved to 2-0 at Louisville, allowing three runs in eight innings Wednesday in a 4-3 victory over Toledo. Luke Hudson got the save with a scoreless ninth inning, lowering his ERA to 4.00. Hudson is 5-8 in 24 appearances, 17 of them starts.
UP NEXT: Reds right-hander Brian Moehler (1-2, 6.35 ERA) will oppose Astros right-hander Dave Mlicki (4-8, 4.93) tonight at 7:10 p.m. Mlicki is 4-1 with a 3.93 ERA in his 11 career appearances vs. the Reds.
