Angels 7, Tigers 6
The Associated Press
ANAHEIM, Calif. Troy Glaus singled home the winning run in the 12th inning and the Anaheim Angels beat the Detroit Tigers 7-6 Tuesday night for their fourth straight victory.
Shawn Wooten doubled with one out and Glaus followed with his hit off Adam Benero (2-6).
The Angels held their two-game edge over Oakland in the AL wild card race.
Al Levine (4-2) got the victory.
Both teams scored a run in the 11th.
Carlos Pena hit an RBI double for the Tigers, with Shane Halter sliding past the plate and then scrambling back to beat catcher Jose Molina's tag.
The Angels tied it when Glaus doubled and scored on pinch-hitter Darin Erstad's single. Anaheim went on to load the bases with one out, but David Eckstein hit a shallow fly ball and Orlando Palmeiro grounded out.
Detroit made it 5-all in the fifth when Chris Truby led off with a double and scored on Damian Jackson's sacrifice fly against Aaron Sele.
Brendan Donnelly pitched 2 1-3 perfect innings after relieving Sele.
The Angels scored three times in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead against Jose Lima.
Scott Spiezio had an RBI single, Bengie Molina had a sacrifice fly and Adam Kennedy hit a go-ahead double.
Hiram Bocachica gave the Tigers a 3-2 lead in the third with his third homer in eight games since being acquired from Los Angeles. Jackson followed with a single and scored on Bobby Higginson's double.
Lima walked Brad Fullmer to open the second and Bengie Molina hit his second homer of the season to left field with two outs, tying the score at 2.
The Tigers scored twice in the first, ending a streak of 22 consecutive scoreless innings by Angels pitchers.
Notes: None of the 16 baserunners Donnelly has inherited have scored. ... Bocachica, a first-round pick by Montreal in June 1994, made his fifth start in CF for the Tigers and short-circuited an Angels rally in the ninth by throwing out Spiezio at third on Bengie Molina's hit-and-run single. ... Oscar Henriquez, who pitched a perfect eighth in relief for Detroit, has not allowed a run in 15 2-3 innings spanning his last 16 appearances. ... Troy Percival, who pitched a hitless ninth, has allowed just one earned run in 36 2-3 career innings against Detroit. ... Erstad did not start because of fatigue in his right leg.
