Pain still afflicting Pineda

Reds notebook

By John Fay, jfay@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Luis Pineda, on the disabled list since July 3 with a sore shoulder, might have surgery on the shoulder that would have him rehabbing into spring training of next year.

“He and I are going to talk about it,” Reds medical director Dr. Tim Kremchek said. “We had him on a strengthening and conditioning program, but (the shoulder) hasn't responded. He's still having pain.”

Pineda, a 27-year-old right-hander, came to the Reds in the Dmitri Young trade with Detroit. He has one of the best arms of the club, throwing up to 97 mph. He appeared in 26 games, allowing only 25 hits in 321/3 innings, while striking out 31.

He was 1-2 with a 3.33 ERA as a reliever. His final two appearances were as a starter. He pitched five shutout innings in his first start to beat the Chicago Cubs 5-2. He didn't make it out of the first inning in his second start against St. Louis.

Kremchek couldn't say how long Pineda would be out if he had the surgery.

“You don't know until you get in there,” Kremchek said.

But it would be at least a year.

RIEDLING'S FUTURE: John Riedling is pitching so well that the Reds are looking at giving him a bigger role in the future.

“He has the stuff to be a starter or a closer,” Reds manager Bob Boone said.

With the Reds in continual search for reliable starters they can afford, Riedling could be converted in spring training. That would be fine with him.

“I think I could be a starter in the major leagues,” he said. “To be a starter, you have to have different pitches and be able to place them. I can do that.”

Riedling has been the Reds' most effective pitcher this season. He is 1-1 with a team-best 1.78 ERA. He has allowed only 23 hits in 301/3 innings. And he's getting better as the year wears on. He has allowed no runs and three hits in his last four appearances (82/3 innings).

Riedling, the 26-year-old right-hander, had shoulder surgery Sept.4.

“I think he's throwing better than he ever has,” Boone said.

        Riedling has surprised even himself.

“You hear it takes a year after surgery,” he said. “I can't believe I'm pitching like I am after the surgery.”

LARKIN OUT: Barry Larkin was a late scratch from the lineup for Saturday's Reds-San Diego Padres game with a stiff neck. Larkin had an MRI, with results expected today. Russell Branyan started at third base, with Aaron Boone moving over to shortstop.

SHE MISSED IT: Sue Boone, Bob's wife and Aaron's mother, picked the wrong son to watch play Friday. She went to Matt's Single-A game in Dayton. Aaron, of course, hit three home runs.

“She missed all the fireworks,” Bob said. “We were up until 3 in the morning watching SportsCenter. She kept wanting to see it again.”

FARM REPORT: Chris Reitsma made his second start at Triple-A Louisville. He pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on four hits in the Bats' 8-2 victory over Columbus.

Scouts Larry Barton and Gene Bennett were watching Reitsma, who could be back with the Reds shortly.

“They said he threw extremely well,” Reds general manager Jim Bowden said. “We're giving him full consideration.”

Chris Sexton went 2-for-5 with a double, a triple and two RBI. Sexton has hit in 24 of his last 26 games.

SILVA HURT: Pitcher Jose Silva was injured while on the disabled list. Silva caught his ankle on a door at Cinergy Field and suffered a cut that required 14 stitches.
