Lieberthal hits three homers against Dodgers

The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Philadelphia Phillies catcher Mike Lieberthal hit three home runs Saturday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers, becoming the second big league player to do it in one day.

Chicago Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa hit three homers at Colorado, tying Johnny Mize's record of six career three-homer games.

Lieberthal connected in three successive at-bats. He led off the fourth and sixth innings with home runs against Hideo Nomo, then added his 12th of the season in the seventh against Giovanni Carrara.

It was Lieberthal's first career three-homer game.

Three players have hit three home runs in a game in the past two days, and five in the last week.

Cincinnati's Aaron Boone went deep three times Friday night against the Padres. Russell Branyan also did it for the Reds at San Diego on Sunday, and Toronto's Chris Woodward accomplished the feat Wednesday against Seattle.

Lieberthal's seventh multihomer game gave him five home runs against Dodgers pitching in a span of eight days. The other two came in a 12-inning victory at Veterans Stadium.

The three-homer game was the first by the Phillies since Sept. 4, 1997, by Bobby Estallela at Montreal.

The last time the Dodgers allowed three homers to one player was June 11, 1999, by Miguel Tejada at Oakland.
