Chicago releases veteran DeShields

Baseball notebook

The Associated Press

DENVER - Veteran infielder Delino DeShields was placed on waivers Friday by the Chicago Cubs for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.

DeShields, in his 13th big-league season, was the Cubs' opening day starter at second base. In 67 games this year, he batted .192 with three homers, 10 RBI and 10 steals.

DeShields, 33, batted .276 in 68 games for Chicago last season. He previously played with Montreal, Los Angeles, St. Louis and Baltimore.

In 1,615 major-league games, he has hit .268 with 80 homers and 463 stolen bases.

The Cubs still owe DeShields $355,191 this year.

CARDINALS: Garrett Stephenson was scratched from his scheduled start today due to a minor shoulder problem.

Stephenson, on the 60-day disabled list since May 29, instead will pitch at Triple-A Memphis. .

Stephenson has been on the disabled list twice this year and has thrown just 292/3 innings.

BRAVES: Pitcher Jason Marquis was scratched from his scheduled start against the Houston Astros on Friday night because of flu-like symptoms.

The Braves decided to hold him out and start left-hander Damian Moss.

WILLIAMS SAGA: Ted Williams' estate withdrew its request for a court to help resolve the dispute over his body, a victory for two children of the baseball great who want to keep it frozen.

“This puts an end to the proceeding that was pending,” said Robert Goldman, the attorney for John Henry and Claudia Williams.

ROCKIES: Right-hander Aaron Cook, one of the Colorado Rockies' top prospects, was recalled Friday from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Cook, 23, is a Hamilton High grad.
