White Sox 7, Angels 6

The Associated Press

CHICAGO — Royce Clayton picked a perfect time for his first bases-loaded hit of the season. Clayton hit a broken bat single to give the White Sox a 7-6 comeback win over the Anaheim Angels on Wednesday night.

Clayton had been 0-for-12 with the bases loaded before the single, his 14th hit in his last 30 at-bats.

“I was just looking for a pitch I could handle up in the zone,” Clayton said. “In that situation, you just want to put the ball in play and something is good is going to happen.”

Frank Thomas hit a two-run homer in the sixth and Magglio Ordonez added a two-run shot in the seventh as the White Sox rallied from a 6-2 deficit.

It was the game-ending hit of the year for the White Sox, who won for the sixth time this season when trailing after six innings.

“It was very exciting,” Chicago manager Jerry Manuel said. ” I don't think we even knew how to react. We didn't know whether to go to home plate or to the guy who hit the ball.”

Antonio Osuna (6-2) got one out for the win and Paul Konerko went 4-for-4 with a solo homer.

Troy Glaus and David Eckstein each hit solo home runs, and Garret Anderson hit a two-run double for Anaheim.

Anaheim fell 2 1/2 games behind first-place Seattle in the AL West. The Angels still lead the wild card race by 1 1/2 games over Boston and Oakland.

Anaheim starter Kevin Appier allowed four runs and six hits in six innings.

“Those guys are a fine offensive ballclub,” Anaheim manager Mike Scioscia said. “You've got to give them credit.”

White Sox starter Gary Glover allowed five runs and eight hits in five innings.

Anaheim took a 1-0 lead in the second when Adam Kennedy's infield single drove in Brad Fullmer from second.

With one out in the bottom of the inning, Konerko tied it at 1 with his 23rd homer. The White Sox then loaded the bases and went ahead 2-1 on Josh Paul's sacrifice fly.

The Angels scored three runs in the fourth on Darin Erstad's RBI single and Anderson's two-run double. Tom Salmon was thrown out at the plate on the hit.

Glaus hit his 20th homer in the fifth to extend Anaheim's lead to 5-2. Eckstein added a solo shot off Mike Porzio in the sixth to make it 6-2.

Thomas' 18th homer cut it to 6-4 in the bottom half. Ordonez tied it at 6 with his homer off Ben Weber in the seventh.

Notes: Anderson's fourth-inning double was his 42nd of the season, tying a team record. He was at DH again Wednesday due to a hamstring injury. ... 1B Scott Spiezio didn't start for a second straight game because of a bruised right knee, but he pinch hit for Fullmer in the seventh and remained in the game at first. ... Chicago's Aaron Rowand started in center field Wednesday after sitting out Tuesday with neck spasms. ... LHP Jim Parque, recalled Tuesday from Triple-A Charlotte, will start Thursday. Parque, 13-6 in 2001, has been rehabbing after shoulder surgery in May 2001.
