SAN DIEGO — Jake Peavy knew he needed a strong outing to give the San Diego Padres' bullpen a break. Peavy was up to the task with 6 2-3 solid innings and Ryan Klesko homered and drove in three runs to lead the Padres to a 5-2 win Wednesday night over the Philadelphia Phillies.

        San Diego used all seven relievers in a 16-inning, 5-4 loss to Philadelphia on Tuesday night in a game that lasted 4 hours, 51 minutes.

        Peavy, 21, came through like a veteran as he worked out of a jam in the third inning before settling down and breezing through the Phillies lineup.

        “Every time I go out there, I want to give them the night off, but tonight especially,” said Peavy.

        Peavy (3-4) survived the third inning, surrendering two runs on four consecutive singles before pitching out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam.

        Peavy, making his seventh major league start, settled down and retired 11 straight batters until a leadoff single by Marlon Anderson in the seventh.

        “Staying away from the big inning was the key,” Peavy said.

        The rookie allowed two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

        “Tonight, he kept his composure and stayed away from the big inning,” Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. “That has hurt him a couple of times before.”

        Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth for his 28th save in 30 opportunities and the 342nd of his career, moving him past Rollie Fingers into sole possession of sixth place on the all-time list.

        Klesko had an RBI groundout that tied it at 2 in the third inning, then hit a two-run homer off Vicente Padilla in the fifth for a 4-2 lead.

        “I was looking for a fastball and I had to adjust,” Klesko said. “He just hung a slider and I hit it.”

        Padilla (11-7) gave up five runs on 10 hits over 5 1-3 innings.

        “I was missing my spots,” Padilla said. “I was constantly falling behind in the count. When I wanted to throw a strike, they hit it.”

        Said Phillies manager Larry Bowa: “His location was not really good tonight. He was down the middle of the plate a lot.”

        Deivi Cruz had an RBI triple and Gene Kingsale added a run-scoring single for San Diego, which broke a three-game losing streak.

        Down 1-0, the Phillies touched Peavy for four consecutive one-out singles in the third inning. Ricky Ledee and Placido Polanco each singled with one out before Bobby Abreu and Pat Burrell each singled in a run.

        But after an error by third baseman Julius Matos loaded the bases, Peavy escaped further trouble by getting Travis Lee to ground into a force out at home and retiring Tomas Perez on a grounder to first.

        “I was just trying to get a groundball double play,” Peavy said.

        Notes: For the eighth straight game, the Padres had at least 10 hits. ... Phillies SS Jimmy Rollins (sore right arm) missed his second straight start. ... San Diego 3B Phil Nevin was held out of the starting lineup after Tuesday's long game.
