Dunn passes 100 walks

On pace to break Morgan's club record

By John Fay jfay@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

DENVER - Even when Adam Dunn struggles at the plate - he broke an 0-for-15 skid Sunday - "it seems like he's still getting on base twice a day,” said Reds manager Bob Boone. That's because Dunn is walking more often than any player in Reds history.

On Tuesday night, he became the first Red to walk 100 times in a season since Joe Morgan walked 117 times in 1977. Dunn, who took his 101st walk Wednesday, is on pace for 146, which would break Morgan's club record (132 in '75).

“Any time I'm seeing the ball well, I'm going to walk a lot,” Dunn said. “I think the way to hit .300 is walking a lot, because you're not going to going to swing at bad pitches.”

Dunn entered Wednesday second in the National League to Barry Bonds in walks (100 to 124) and on-base percentage (.565 to .446).

“I think walking helps me because I'm going to see better pitches,” Dunn said, “and it helps the team because I'm on base a lot.”

Dunn's selectiveness also leads to strikeouts. With 116, he's on pace for 168 Ks, which would break Mike Cameron's club record (145 in 1999).

“I'll take pitches early in the count that I should crush,” Dunn said. “That's how I get behind and strike out.”

Dunn has seen more total pitches (2,050) and more pitches per at-bat (4.34) than anyone else in the NL.
