Baseball talks positive, management lawyer says

Baseball negotiators put in their longest day of talks Monday and, according to management attorney Rob Manfred, made good progress on the revenue-sharing issue.

The players union, meanwhile, will hold a conference call of its executive board Tuesday to be updated on negotiations. The player representatives are expected to be asked to poll their teams on whether they would approve a strike date. They also will decide if it's necessary to hold an in-person meeting Monday in Chicago.

If a strike date is set, it likely will be set then. Negotiations resume at 10:30 a.m. (Eastern) Tuesday.

“The pace of talks will be dictated (by) where we are in the process,” Manfred said. “I would expect the activity to be heightened this week.”

The two sides met in New York for three sessions that lasted nearly six hours. The last meeting didn't break up until after 8 p.m.

Union chief Don Fehr, who's been away from negotiations while meeting with each of the 30 teams, took part in Monday's talks.

“We're still looking for the right way to bridge the gaps,” union lawyer Michael Weiner said.

Revenue sharing dominated the morning and evening sessions. Manfred said the controversial luxury tax issue — management wants the amounts of payrolls over $98 million taxed at 50 percent — also was discussed briefly.

“We have gone days now where we have not moved in the wrong direction on revenue sharing,” Manfred said. “I do believe this issue is resolvable.”
