Yankees 4, Angels 0
The Associated Press
ANAHEIM, Calif. Andy Pettitte came within two outs of a shutout, and the New York Yankees got RBI singles from Rondell White and Bernie Williams to beat Anaheim.
The Angels dropped three games behind first-place Seattle in the AL West, while the Yankees remained four ahead of Boston in the AL East.
Pettitte (6-4) allowed four hits over 8 1-3 innings and was lifted after giving up ninth-inning singles to Darin Erstad and Garret Anderson. Ramiro Mendoza got two consecutive outs for his third save.
Kevin Appier (9-9) was charged with four runs three earned and seven hits in six innings.
Mariners 3, Indians 1
SEATTLE Bret Boone homered for the third straight game to help Jamie Moyer win his third straight decision as Seattle beat Cleveland.
The Mariners (68-42) moved a season-high 26 games over .500 with their longest winning streak since June 25-29.
Edgar Martinez also homered for the Mariners in the rematch of last year's first-round playoff matchup won by Seattle.
Moyer (11-4) gave up only a 428-foot home run to Jim Thome off the second-deck facade in right field in the fourth inning. The crafty left-hander allowed four hits in 7 1-3 innings, lowering his ERA to 2.79, fifth best in the AL.
Kazuhiro Sasaki got four outs for his 29th save in 33 opportunities.
Cleveland's Danys Baez (8-8) pitched a five-hitter for his first career complete game.
Tigers 3, Athletics 1
OAKLAND, Calif. Mark Redman outpitched Barry Zito at the Coliseum, where the Oakland ace hadn't lost a regular-season game in 14 months, as Detroit snapped a five-game losing streak.
Redman (7-9) pitched seven innings of six-hit ball, striking out five and working out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh.
Juan Acevedo got three outs for his 19th save in 23 chances.
Carlos Pena homered against his former teammates, and Detroit also used two unearned runs to hand Zito (15-4) just his second loss in 18 starts.
Zito's Oakland-record streak of 16 straight victories at the Coliseum ended, but Miguel Tejada extended his hitting streak to 22 games the longest in the AL this season.
