Cardinals turn majors' fourth triple play this season

The Associated Press

MIAMI — The St. Louis Cardinals turned their first triple play in more than nine years Thursday night, catching the Florida Marlins running on a line drive to right field.

With Mike Lowell on first and Derrek Lee on second in the sixth inning, Eric Owens lined to right. J.D. Drew caught the ball on the run and threw to shortstop Edgar Renteria at second to double up Lowell. Renteria then turned and finished the triple play with a relay to first that easily beat Lee.

“I should have gotten back to first,” said Lee, admitting that he thought there was one out. “When (Drew) threw it to second to get Mike, I thought that was it. I knew I messed up.”

        Nonetheless, Florida won 4-0.

It was the fourth triple play this season in the major leagues. The last one also involved the Marlins, who turned the first triple play in club history Sunday against the Montreal Expos.

“It was the first time I have ever been involved in one,” Drew said. “You just don't come across them in the outfield that much. You don't see many like that.”

The Cardinals last turned a triple play May 11, 1993, against the New York Mets.

The Marlins have hit into three triple plays in their 10-year history. The last one came May 11, 2000, against Atlanta.
