White activated; Reitsma sent down

The Reds activated left-hander Gabe White from the disabled list before Wednesday's game with the Los Angeles Dodgers. That meant somebody had to go, and Chris Reitsma was the unfortunate one.

“It's one of those unfair things in baseball,” Reds manager Bob Boone said. “"Take your 3.50 ERA and go to Louisville.' There are no guarantees, but, in September, I think he'll be right back here.”

Reitsma, a 24-year-old right-hander, spent most of the year in the Reds' rotation. But he was put in the bullpen after the team acquired Ryan Dempster and Brian Moehler, and Jared Fernandez emerged as a starter.

Reitsma, 4-8 with a 3.41 ERA, had pitched only twice in relief.

“He needs to pitch,” Boone said. “I want him ready in case something happens here.”

Reitsma will make his first career Triple-A start Sunday in Louisville. He made the big-league club last year after pitching Double-A the year before.

White has been out since July13 with a broken right little toe.

“It's been awhile,” White said. “But I'm here to be out there (pitching).”

White probably will move back into his role as the Reds' No.1 left-handed setup man. White is 4-1 with a 2.54 ERA, and left-handers are hitting only .167 against him.

“Right back into the fire,” Boone said. “Throwing-wise, he's fine.”

Fielding is the big concern for White, who tested the toe Monday.

“It doesn't feel any worse,” he said.
