Indians 5, Athletics 4
The Associated Press
OAKLAND, Calif. Ricky Gutierrez drove in a pair of runs and Ryan Drese won for just the second time in eight starts as the Cleveland Indians made it two in a row over the Oakland Athletics, 5-4 Tuesday night.
Drese (9-8), who grew up in Oakland and attended Cal, received a nice ovation from family and friends when he came out of the game after 5 1-3 innings. He gave up one run on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
In three previous starts, Drese allowed 21 runs and 25 hits in 7 1-3 innings. He gave up eight runs in one inning against the New York Yankees in his last start on July 24.
Mark Wohlers recorded the final four outs for his second save in as many days after not recording one in over four years. Milton Bradley made a diving catch in shallow center with runners on first and second to end it.
Cory Lidle (3-9) allowed five runs three earned and five hits over 5 1-3 innings.
Ricardo Rincon began the day with the Indians, but was traded to the Athletics for minor league infielder Marshall McDougall just before gametime. Rincon spent the game in the Athletics bullpen, available to pitch.
I wanted to try and get it done before the game started because I didn't want Rincon pitching against us, A's general manager Billy Beane said. It was somewhat surreal. I told him this was the easiest way to get traded.
Rincon retired the two left-handed Oakland batters David Justice and Eric Chavez he faced on Monday night to help preserve the Indians' win.
The Indians opened the scoring with a run in the first inning. Matt Lawton was hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Omar Vizquel. Bill Selby followed with a sacrifice fly.
The A's tied it in the fifth. After Mark Ellis and Miguel Tejada singled, Justice followed with an RBI single.
Cleveland broke it open with four runs in the sixth. Matt Lawton singled, Vizquel doubled and Selby was safe on Lidle's fielding error to load the bases. Jim Thome hit a sacrifice fly scoring Lawton and Milton Bradley singled home Vizquel. Gutierrez followed with a two-run single.
Scott Hatteberg singled home a run in the seventh and Mark Ellis hit a two-run homer in the eighth.
