Finances foil shot at Rolen
By John Fay, jfay@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The Reds apparently have missed out on acquiring another top player because of financial reasons.
Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Scott Rolen reportedly was negotiating a long-term deal with the St.Louis Cardinals.
The Cardinals also need to pay the remainder of Rolen's current contract, about $2.9 million.
The Reds were in position to do neither.
Rolen told the Philadelphia Inquirer he would consider a contract extension with any of the teams believed to be chasing him, including the Reds.
But can Cincinnati do anything? Rolen asked. Probably not.
In the reported deal with St.Louis, the Phillies would get third baseman Placido Polanco, left-hander Bud Smith and right-handed prospect Jimmy Journell. Journell is considered the Cards' top prospect.
Reds general manager Jim Bowden could not be reached for comment.
