AL roundup

The Associated Press

BOSTON — Rodrigo Lopez pitched eight strong innings for his 11th win, the most by a Baltimore rookie since 1989, leading the Orioles to a 9-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night.

Melvin Mora and Howie Clark had consecutive RBI doubles in Baltimore's five-run third inning. Tony Batista added a solo homer for Baltimore, which halted a three-game losing streak.

Lopez (11-3), who won his fifth straight decision, allowed two runs and four hits, walking one and striking out eight.

The 27-year-old's 11 wins are the most by an Orioles' rookie since Bob Milacki won 14 in 1989.

        Yankees 12, Devil Rays 9

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Raul Mondesi homered and drove in four runs and Robin Ventura hit a two-run homer as New York beat Tampa Bay.

Mondesi had a two-run double during a four-run fourth, was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth and hit a solo homer in the ninth. Ventura hit his 20th homer in the eighth.

Mike Mussina (13-4) allowed four runs and nine hits in six innings as the Yankees beat the Devil Rays for the ninth time in 10 games this season.

        Tigers 8, Indians 5

CLEVELAND — Bobby Higginson, Randall Simon and Robert Fick each had four hits and two RBIs to lead Detroit over Cleveland.

Jim Thome hit two homers for Cleveland in his return after missing six games with a stiff back. He hit his 29th in the sixth to bring the Indians within 7-4, and blasted a 470-foot shot to right in the eighth to make it 8-5.

The Tigers' first five batters went a combined 18-for-25. Detroit's 19 hits tied a season high — set Tuesday in a 10-1 win over Kansas City.

Brian Powell (1-0) earned his first win in nearly two years. Powell, whose contract was purchased from Triple-A Toledo earlier in the day, allowed four runs and seven hits over six innings.

        Twins 10, Blue Jays 5

MINNEAPOLIS — Jacque Jones hit two home runs, including a tiebreaking two-run shot in the sixth inning as Minnesota beat Toronto.

Jones and Doug Mientkiewicz each drove in three runs for the Twins, who had 16 hits. All nine Minnesota starters had at least one hit, led by A.J. Pierzynski's three singles.

Minnesota's Joe Mays made his second start since coming off the 60-day disabled list with an elbow injury. He gave up homers to Vernon Wells and Carlos Delgado as the Blue Jays took a 5-1 lead, and left after five innings.

        Rangers 12, Athletics 4

ARLINGTON, Texas — Carl Everett became the first Texas player to homer twice in an inning, connecting twice in a nine-run seventh, as the Rangers rallied to defeat Oakland.

Ruben Rivera hit a tiebreaking homer in the seventh, Juan Gonzalez drove in three runs and Rafael Palmeiro hit a two-run homer, snapping a streak of 17 straight solo homers.

Trailing 4-3, the Rangers scored nine runs in the seventh in their biggest inning of the season.

Everett and Rivera homered off Oakland starter Mark Mulder (11-6) to give the Rangers a 5-4 lead. After the Rangers loaded the bases, Gonzalez hit a two-run single to score Michael Young and Kevin Mench.

Palmeiro followed with an RBI single and Ivan Rodriguez hit a two-run double to make it 10-4. Everett capped the inning with a two-run blast for his eighth homer of the year.

        White Sox 10, Royals 2

CHICAGO — Highly touted Willie Harris, now getting a full-time chance in the majors after the White Sox traded Ray Durham, hit his first big league home run as Chicago defeated Kansas City.

Jose Valentin also homered and Paul Konerko drove in three runs for the White Sox. Kansas City has lost four in a row and five of six since a nine-game winning streak.

Dan Wright (7-8) gave up two runs, scattered eight hits and struck out seven in 6 1-3 innings.

Royals starter Shawn Sedlacek(1-1) gave up four runs and eight hits in six innings.
